Who We Are:
Since the fall of 2008, we had many residents of the Smith Point community come to us and request that another committee be started, a committee that was inclusive of all the residents who reside here and that truly had the best interest of the community at heart. After much thought and discussion, the Smith Point Village Exploratory Committee (SPVEC) was formed and the announcement was made on Friday, February 13, 2009.
Much has been accomplished in the eight month's since it's inception. As of September 1, 2009, there have been 6 fundraisers with 2 more planned over the next 3 months, the boundaries have been set and we are 1000 houses into the census.
We currently have 20 committee members and over 50 volunteers - we are a group of residents including Democrats, Republicans and Independants - that have been able to put aside our differences to come together for a common cause. For the safety and well being of our committee members and volunteers, their names have not been made public. You will however, see them at meetings, fundraisers and doing the census.
We are dedicated to the Village Incorporation of Smith Point for the revitalization and preservation of our community. We believe that everyone who lives here, no matter how long they have been a resident of this community or how much money they make, has a right to have a say in what happens here. As a resident of this community you have the right to be represented fairly and honestly and to be included in the village boundaries and the village process.
We believe that by leaving all the services with the town except code enforcement, zoning and building, we will be able to deal with the problems in our community as well as keep the taxes down. By including the Montauk Highway business district, we ensure that there will be no increase in taxes. This will also make us eligible for Business Revitalization Grants to not only clean up the area, but also give us a walkable and family friendly main street.
Because there has been a tremendous amount of negativity, misinformation and outright lies put out to the community about the SPVEC, we encourage you to contact us if you have a concern or a question about our committee. We will be happy to disprove anything you have been told with provable facts and records.
