11/13/09 Status Update

We've been very busy since the end of September! We had a Harvest Festival on Sunday October 25th and although it was smaller than our first two fairs, it was a successful event. You can see photo's of the Harvest Festival by clicking "Event Photos" above.

We had a great turn out of residents at our last meeting on Saturday November 7th and signed up more volunteers and committee members. We are always surprised to hear from people that didn't know anything about the village, but know that we are slowly but surely getting the word out to all the residents. It's wonderful to see all the bumperstickers and yard signs around town. We heard that people are having their signs stolen from their yards, if you are one of these unfortunate people, please contact us and we will be happy to replace the sign for you.

We have a Pampered Chef fundraiser scheduled for Saturday, November 14th and have also posted directions on how to place an order on-line if you are unable to attend. Our Tupperware fundraiser raised $190 and we would like to Thank all who attended!

We are still looking for volunteers for the census. We have currently completed a little over 1200 houses. Again, this is the longest and hardest part of the village incorporation process - the faster we get the census done, the faster we can become a village. If you can help even for a couple of hours or if you can do your own block, please let us know.

Until Christmas, we will be working on a project to give back to our community. We have started a "New Toys & Warm Clothing" drive. In these hard economic times with people losing their jobs and struggling to make ends meet, we thought it would be nice to do something for the residents of our own community. We have reached out to two local churches to help and will keep you posted.

We wish you and your families a Happy and Safe Holiday Season!

9/27/09 Chinese Auction

The Chinese Auction was very successful and you can view pictures of the event on the "Event Photos" tab above. A HUGE "Thank You"  to Greg and Martha at Perfect Balance Massage Therapy for donating the use of their facility for the auction and for the very generous donations and (2) Swedish Massage gift certificates. They also brought in the massage chair and were selling massages and donating all the proceeds to the village effort. It is support like this that ensures we are going to make history and become a protected village!

We are very grateful for the many businesses who support us with donations and sponsorships. We are also blessed with committee members, volunteers and supporters who are so dedicated to the village effort and passionate about the cause. Thank you to everyone for helping us have another successful fundraising event!

9/03/09 The Historic Hamlet of Smith Point

On September 21, 2009, the SPBPOA and their village committee are holding a meeting at the Mastic Beach Fire House about the "Historic Hamlet of Smith Point" and have invited people to come and make their voices heard to the media that they have invited. This push for the Hamlet of Smith Point has been initiated by 3 people....one who lives behind Mavis Tire (not in Smith Point), one who lives in Woodland Estates (not in Smith Point) and one who lives by the bridge (but who's legal residence is in North Carolina, again, not in Smith Point). The whole reason for this sudden passion for the Hamlet of Smith Point is to prevent us from including all the residents of South Shirley in the village boundaries.

In their quest to push for the Hamlet of Smith Point, they have created the Smith Point Historical Society.
We find this very interesting because according to the Town of Brookhaven, The Manor of St. George and the State of New York, there is no "Smith Point Historical Society". The representative of The Manor of St. George who advised us that there was no Smith Point Historical Society also stated that they did hear that one was being formed by Dominic Licata, a fellow cohort of Delia McKernan who is the President of the Smith Point Beach Property Owners Association and head of their Village Committee, the committee that wants an exclusionary village, one that does not include everyone who lives here.

The people involved in this are not Historians or experts in the history of Smith Point and much of the information they are putting out there is misleading and appears to be an attempt to confuse and agitate the community. This area was never called Smith Point or correctly, Smith's Point. Additionally, the SPBPOA's own village boundaries blatantly violates the "Hamlet of Smith Point" boundaries they claim so vehemently to want to protect, hence the sign being posted by Woodland Estates, when the area truly considered to be Smith Point goes from Havenwood (where CVS is) to the beach.

We are taking our boundaries all the way to the south service road of Sunrise Highway. The benefits of doing this far out-weigh the negatives. If we don't include this area, it will continue to be inundated with the problems that currently plague our community. The area will continue it's downward spiral and you will have to drive through this area to get to your pretty village. This also provides an additional tax base that would ensure your taxes would not go up - in this economy how many of us can afford another tax increase? Our village isn't about the rich and well-to-do, but about the average residents who work hard to provide for their families and want a nice, safe place to live and raise their children. The only way to really clean up this area is by including the whole community, not just a section of it.

You cannot change history, it is what it is. You can however, make history by helping us take back our community from the dregs of society who have taken over and become a protected incorporated village, no longer at the mercy of Suffolk County and the Town of Brookhaven.

8/30/09 End of Summer Fair

We had a beautiful day for our fair, the sun came out and we had a nice breeze. The fair was very successful and we would like to thank all the wonderful volunteers who helped us today. It was a long day and everyone really pitched in and made today a fun event.

Thank you to all our supporters and all the residents who came out to enjoy the day and support the Village Effort. We handed out village information packets, sold yard signs, village t-shirts and bumper stickers. We also filled out a lot of census forms and were thrilled to see how excited people were about the village.

To see pictures of the fair, click on "EVENT PHOTOS" above.

8/09/09 Committee Update

Due to personal reasons, Anthony Torres has stepped down from the Smith Point Village Exploratory Committee. He will however, stay on as a volunteer.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his dedication and hard work over the last 6 months!

8/08/09 We're Getting Ready For The Fair!

We are 3 weeks away from the End of Summer Fair (Saturday, August 29th, 10:00 am to 7:00 pm) and things are already getting hectic. Our first ad will be coming out in the Yankee Trader this week and will run for the next three weeks. As you can see from our summer fair sponsors tab above, we have sponsors that have returned from the Spring Fair - contrary to what the SPBPOA has been telling people, they KNEW they were supporting us and not the SPBPOA and in fact have our yard signs in their business windows. We will be adding more sponsors as soon as they email their logos to us.

We have room for over 100 vendors and the spaces are going fast. If you are a vendor or know a vendor and want a space at the fair, we strongly encourage you to get your application and payment to us as soon as possible. Spaces are on a first come first serve basis. You can email us for an application at
Smithpoint11967@aol.com. We also have free spaces available for any not-for profits that would like a table. Our Village Committee will also have tables set up where you can get information about the village, purchase T-shirts, bumper stickers and yard signs or sign up to volunteer.  Speaking of which, we are still seeking volunteers to help out at this event, especially people to work in the food booth.

We will have vendors (wind chimes, t-shirts, handbags, sunglasses, Avon, Pampered Chef, Mary Kay, Paving Stones, etc.), food (burgers, hot dogs, sausage and peppers, lattes, corn patties, funnel cakes, etc.), a live band and games for the kids (bean bag toss, ring toss, face painting and temporary tattoos). WBAB and WBLI will also have their vans there and will be handing out free stuff.

Bring your friends and family, have fun at a local event and support the village effort!

7/19/09 Yard Sale Status Report

We had a beautiful day for our yard sale and many people in the community donated some great items. We raised $728 towards the village effort! We would like to thank all the people who donated items and say a special "Thank You" to all the volunteers who tagged, set up, worked all day and stayed to clean up! We were also able to have the residents who dropped by, fill out the census. We have posted pictures of the yard sale and you can view them by clicking on the "Photo" tab above. Our next fundraiser is the Luau which is on Saturday, August 8th at the James V. Kavanaugh Knights of Columbus hall in Mastic. If you haven't already purchased your tickets, you can purchase them by contacting us at Smithpoint11967@aol.com or call 772-2042. Make it a party and get a group of your friends together and take a table for 10!

7/17/09 The Size Of Our Boundaries

The State of New York allows us 5.0 square miles for an incorporated village. Our boundaries are 4.15 square miles. This is larger than many incorporated villages in Suffolk County, however these other villages do not face the same problems that we do. They are not being inundated with sex offenders, sober houses and multiple illegal rentals. It would not make sense to incorporate only a portion of South Shirley because these problems exist throughout our entire community.

For example, if we incorporated a smaller area and you lived on the edge of the boundary, what is to stop a sober house or multiple rental from being on the block behind you, outside of the incorporated village? The incorporated village would have no authority and would not be able to assist you. Another example would be the yellow sober house on William Floyd Parkway which is included in our village boundary but not the SPBPOA's boundary. If their limited village boundary were to go through, contrary to what they are telling you, there is nothing they can do about this sober house as it would be out of their jurisdiction.

We need to take in the whole community so that we can address all the problems that exist here. We cannot afford to take an exclusionary stance in this for any reason. By not taking in the whole community, we would be allowing the very conditions we are fighting against to exist in the areas surrounding our village, thereby negating anything we do to better the quality of life issues here.

We think it would be nice when you, your friends and family exit off of Sunrise to be able to come right into your village. We would be able to apply for Business Revitalization grants and would be able to clean up the Montauk Highway area as well as William Floyd Parkway.

Larger than other villages in Suffolk?   We have to be.

7/08/09 The SPBPOA Village Meeting on 7/07/09

It is with shock, horror and complete condemnation that we report what transpired at the SPBPOA's village meeting last night. Apparently they have conducted background checks into people on our village committee and picked one of our committee members who had a checkered past (and we do stress PAST as there is nothing since 2002) and printed and handed this out. This information included this person's social security number, date of birth and all personal information as well as criminal background. We were aware of this committee members past, but also were aware of how hard he has tried to turn his life around and become an upstanding citizen. He has volunteered and worked tirelessly on our village effort and he is a valued member of our committee. He is very upset by what has happened and has offered to resign, we are not accepting his resignation and are fully supporting him. Please note that this is in direct violation of an order of protection that he has against Steven McKernan for the attack in February in Pathmark and all information has been handed over to the District Attorney and the Presiding Judge.

They have also posted private personal information about our committee members on the internet. We feel this is shameless behavior by a "so called" civic leader, as well as the Smith Point Village Committee. If they had the tremendous amount of support they claim to have, they would not need to sink to such deplorable measures. There is truly a lack of moral and ethical values here.

We stand firm in our commitment to the village effort that includes ALL of the residents here. We will not be bullied or intimidated into stepping down, as is the plan of the SPBPOA and the Smith Point Village Committee. They have brought nothing real to the table, only personal attacks and negativity and this is why they will never succeed at getting their version of a village through. This is why our committee was formed, because the community does not want to be involved with people who behave in this despicable manner.

6/28/09 THE HAMLET OF SMITH POINT AND THE SMITH POINT HISTORICAL SOCIETY

There has been quite a bit of misinformation put out there about us tampering with the true identity of the "Hamlet of Smith Point" with our boundaries. According to the Manor of St. George's paperwork, the traditional Smith Point boundary has always been considered to be from Havenwood and Golden Gate, south to the beach.

The SPBPOA have announced that they have begun a petition which they claim has already been signed by hundreds of people, to protect the "Hamlet of Smith Point" and have also scheduled a meeting for July 7th at 7:00 pm at the library. Their guest speaker will be a member of the Smith Point Historical Society.

We find this very interesting because according to the Town of Brookhaven, The Manor of St. George and the State of New York, there is no "Smith Point Historical Society". The representative of The Manor of St. George who advised us that there was no Smith Point Historical Society also stated that they did hear that one was being formed by Dominic Licata, a fellow cohort of Delia McKernan and alleged SPBPOA member.
The Smith Point Historical Society's mailing address of P.O. Box 406, Shirley, Ny 11967 is also the mailing address of the SPBPOA, their newly formed Smith Point Chamber of Commerce and The Smith Point Village Committee.

The people involved in this are not Historians or experts in the history of Smith Point and much of the information they are putting out there is misleading and appears to be an attempt to confuse and agitate the community. Additionally, the SPBPOA's own village boundaries blatantly violates the "Hamlet of Smith Point" boundaries they claim so vehemently to want to protect and in fact, their two leaders don't even reside in the Hamlet of Smith Point's boundaries - one resides in Woodland Estates and the other lives off of Montauk Highway behind Mavis Tire.

Are we going past what is traditionally considered "Smith Point"? Absolutely. However, we want people to understand that the Village will be named by the people who reside in the village and may not necessarily be "Smith Point". Whatever the residents decide to name the new Village, it does not in any way change the Historical Facts of this area. Additionally, your address (whether you use Shirley or Smith Point) would not change. You would still live in Shirley and/or Smith Point, but in the Village of "blank".

We are taking our boundaries all the way to the south service road of Sunrise Highway. The benefits of doing this far out-weigh the negatives. This will make us eligible for business revitalization grants - wouldn't it be nice to get off of Sunrise highway right into your village? A place that would be a family friendly, nice business district? If we don't include this area, it will continue to be inundated with the problems that currently plague our community. The area will continue it's downward spiral and you will have to drive through this area to get to your pretty village. This also provides an additional tax base that would ensure your taxes would not go up - in this economy how many of us can afford another tax increase? Our village isn't about the rich and well-to-do, but about the average residents who work hard to provide for their families and want a nice, safe place to live and raise their children.

6/20/09 Yard Sale Status Report

The yard sale on Saturday, June 20th was a huge success and we raised $1750 towards the village. We had very little left and had to end the sale early (4:00 pm) due to rain. We would like to thank everyone who donated all the great items for the sale.

We would especially like to thank all the volunteers who came over the night before to sort and tag all the items, went home at 1:00 in the morning and came back at 7:30 to help set up and stayed to help out. We are truly thankful for the dedicated volunteers and committee members that we have, we couldn't do any of this without you. Your dedication and commitment really proves our motto of "A Village For The People, By The People".

We currently have 19 committee members and over 50 volunteers - contact us if you would like to be a part of this amazing group of people, people who truly want something better for our community.

Thank you again to everyone who helped make this fundraiser a success!

6/12/09 SPVEC Status Report

As many already know, the Spring fair was a huge success! We were able to speak to many people about the village AND raise money towards the Village effort. We are in the process of working on an end of summer fair and will post the details as soon as we can.

There is a fundraising yard sale scheduled for next Saturday, June 20th at 182 William Floyd Parkway. We have already received many donations including: Bakers Rack, Glass Storm Door, Scanner with CD, Fishing Tackle, Tuner, Childrens Clothing, Furniture, etc. If you have items you'd like to donate, please contact us at
Smithpoint11967@aol.com or 772-2042 to make arrangements to drop off or have us pick up.

We have several other fundraising projects in the works, so if you'd like to volunteer some time to help out, please let us know.

5/4/09 Spring Fair Update

Despite some interference from the opposition, the Spring Fair is still on and we are making outstanding progress! We have received tremendous support from the local businesses, not only in sponsorships and monetary donations, but also in donations for the Chinese Auction and the Raffle. To date, we have received a new gas barbeque grill, a patio set, a snow board, a box of snow board bindings, a body board, a snow board Monopoly game, a childrens waterproof mattress cover, emerald and gold earings, a blue tooth, deck stain, deck waterproofing and brush kill, an adult rod and reel combo, a childrens rod and reel combo and a ladies watch. We've also received gift certificates for restaurants, tire rotations and oil changes, pool openings, ravioli, ice cream cake, jewelry, etc., plus monetary donations. You can see pictures of the donated items by clicking on the "Fair Donations" tab.

We've booked a live band that plays blues, jazz and rock-n-roll and we've gotten vendors that sell Mary Kay, cotton sheets, candles, jewelry, personalized gifts, pet bedding, wind chimes, etc. This is really going to be a wonderful event - we're already getting emails from people saying how much they're looking forward to this.

4/26/09 Living in a Democracy

There has been a lot of propaganda put out there about there only being one "existing" committee and how we are trying to derail the SPBPOA's village effort. Let's put that into prospective. We live in a democratic society where we have the privilege to choose who we want to represent us. The person or person's with the most support wins the election. This is no different. The community has the RIGHT to choose who they want to proceed with a village effort on their behalf. They have the RIGHT to review the behavior and/or actions of the people involved and decide who they truly believe has the best interest of the community at heart. Badgering, bullying, attacking and lying about the other committee only accomplishes division and confusion. As much as we would like to defend ourselves against the onslaught of negativity put out to the community, we feel that in the long run, people will see for themselves what is really going on and make their decision accordingly. We have faith in the hard-working, good people who live here.

4/08/09 We're having a Spring Fair!

We are very pleased to announce that we are having a fund raiser - our first annual Spring Fair, on Saturday, May 23rd from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. Rain date is Sunday, May 24th.

We have room for 125+ tables and they are going fast - let us know if you would like a table. Click on the Spring Fair Tab above for a vendor application. All spaces are on a first come, first serve basis.

There will also be a Chinese Auction, a dunk tank, food, ice cream and free games and a clown for the kids. Items are already being donated for the Chinese Auction, so if you have a new item you'd like to donate, please let us know. Our committee will have a toy table and a baked goods table as well as a village table. For more information, please send an email to Smithpoint11967@aol.com, attention Anthony Torres, Spring Fair Coordinator.

Make sure you mark the date on your calendar, (it's Memorial Day Weekend) and bring your friends and family!

4/3/09 Email from the SPBPOA/Village Committee

We've been getting emails and phone calls from people who received an email from the SPBPOA and their village committee. Regardless of what the email says, we are committed to not being involved in any negativity towards their committee and their members. As we have stated many times in the past, we are staying focused on the village process and refused to be side-tracked. Thank you for your support and well wishes, we appreciate it.

Saturday, March 28th Meeting

We are so excited, the meeting was a huge success! Thank you to all who walked and/or drove here today, we're sorry about the parking situation but are so glad you came.
We covered a lot of information today and had our village attorney present to answer questions. We were also honored by a surprise guest, Lou Marcoccia, Town of Brookhaven Receiver of Taxes, who came and shared some valuable information and was able to answer questions.
Almost everyone who attended signed up to volunteer and also took home extra packets to hand out to their friends and neighbors. Thank you to everyone who donated to the village, we actually weren't expecting it.
